Project Description

The Neosho Wildlife Area is a man-made marsh, located on the broad floodplain below the junction of Flat Rock Creek and the Neosho River. The wildlife area was initially developed in 1960 and has become a premier waterfowl region due to intensive management aimed to furnish a resting and feeding place for migratory waterfowl.

Due to aging infrastructure and continually-increasing maintenance costs, Schwab Eaton was retained to first develop a master plan and construction cost estimates for site improvements. Working in concert with KDWPT staff, the master plan included a new river pump station, discharge line with direct discharge to the managed pools, centralized parking lot with boat ramps, boating canals, and additional levees to improve wetland management and public use. Additional improvements included the replacement of various water control structures, the installation of additional water control structures, pool reshaping, and rehabilitation of the emergency spillway.

Initial work included topographic surveys, planning, and a geotechnical investigation. Due to funding constraints, it was decided to design and construct the project in five phases. Construction drawings and specifications were prepared for the following project components: Pump Station (financed by Ducks Unlimited), Pump Station Delivery Line, Levees & Water Control Structures, Parking Lot & Boat Ramps, and Emergency Spillway & Water Control Structures.
