WATER
AND WASTE WATER
Long
term reliability with a common sense budget - that is the basis for designing
in rural America. Today's emphasis on rebuilding the rural community has
been strengthened by the formation of rural water districts - large areas
laced with a network of waterline carrying potable water to the rural
areas for domestic and livestock use. Virtually nothing is more essential
than these facilities in communities throughout the civilized world.
Pump
stations, grit chambers, chlorinators, sluice gates, aeration tanks, clarifiers,
digesters, sludge beds, contact basins, flowmeters, filters, flumes, control
valves, transmission mains, laterals, collectors - this is the language
of water and sewerage facilities.
Few
things are more complex to design, however unglamorous the subject may
seem. Peculiar shapes for the concrete structural components make these
projects a constant challenge. "Item-itus" is the word we have
coined to describe the intricacies involved in the equipment and piping
layouts. To bring everything into workable condition, starting from scratch
on the usual farmland at the edge of a river - this is a real test of
the designer's ability and imagination.
To
assure attaining something more than basic facilities, the most advanced
design concepts are needed. Ideally the goal is to achieve a compatible
balance in cost, design and construction. This requires an optimum effort
and highly specialized management and technical skills. Endless detail
in planning, engineering and estimating is required.
Diverse
elements must be resolved by people who are able to visualize all aspects
of the project and who can determine what constitutes common sense quality,
good design and sound procedure. These are the people who analyze, evaluate
and control the system design. The result is an effective system with
value-engineered advantages.
