Denison Avenue is a major north-south collector located on the west edge of Kansas State University. With traffic from the University and intermittent heavy traffic flows from football and basketball games, the City of Manhattan determined that improvements to the existing two-lane road would show a huge return on the investment.
Schwab-Eaton provided field surveys, design, plan preparation, specifications, and construction support services for this 1.4-mile roadway improvement project. Construction included 2,400 feet of patching with a Novachip overlay; 4,000 feet of reconstruction to a three-lane, 40-foot concrete roadway; reconstruction of intersections at Claflin Road and Jardine Drive; and new turn lanes at Anderson and Kimball Avenues. A major challenge was the construction phasing, which took into account the continuing University traffic, and even accommodated one-way flow during KSU football games. Schwab-Eaton provided construction engineering services for several unanticipated utility conflicts that arose during construction, and provided the construction inspection for the City. The project was completed seven months ahead of schedule, and received the 2006 ACPA Excellence in Paving Award for its category.
