Schwab Eaton assisted a design-build firm in the design of this sustainable site located on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. Schwab Eaton provided supplemental surveying services, design, and construction related services for the site infrastructure including stormwater management, site grading, paving, and site landscape and irrigation. Schwab Eaton implemented several sustainable practices to assist in seeking LEED Gold status for this project. Over fifty nine percent of the site was maintained as vegetated open space. Care was taken to protect many existing trees and to preserve the Campus Creek drainage way that passes through the site. To minimize water use, Schwab Eaton’s landscape architects specified native and low water-use plant materials, and a weather-based, water-efficient irrigation system for select portions of the site. An outdoor class room (amphitheater) was designed on the north end of the site with native limestone boulders for seating and natural grass surfacing.
