Havens Park Concept Development

The next step in the master planning process builds upon the ideas we've heard thus far. The Design Team prepared four conceptual master plan alternatives for Havens Park that incorporate these ideas in different ways. Three of the concepts were developed during the two-day Design Workshop held September 2 and 3. All the concepts include paved and unpaved walking/biking trails, an outdoor amphitheatre, nature center and restroom facilities, parking, picnic shelters, and a scenic overlook. The concepts also include elements unique to each plan.

Concept "A" incorporates many of the features that were shared with the Design Team during the Discovery Meeting and Community Meeting #1, as well as ideas that were submitted to us by phone or through this website. The concept features a large nature center and botanical garden, camping areas, and a "fitness trail" with exercise stations.

Concept "B" features a larger amphitheatre with supporting infrastructure and an arboretum in the southeast corner of the site. The nature center and on-site park ranger's house could be partially powered by a wind turbine. Camping areas  and an extreme sledding hill are at the northern end of the park.

Concept "C" features a spiral scenic overlook, a disc golf area, and outdoor classrooms. The "reclaimed meadow" would include meandering paths through fields of native grasses and wildflowers. An amphitheatre, nature center, restrooms, playground, and picnic areas are all located near the entrance to the park at the north end of the site.

Concept "D" features a two-story nature center built into a hillside near the entrance, a multi-purpose court and playground, and a multi-level lookout tower. The amphitheatre is located so that it overlooks a small pond. The south end of the park is fenced and gated to provide a separate activity area for BMX bikes and/or ATVs.

The four plans will be on display at the Riverfront Community Center and the Public Library through Friday, October 2, 2009. The Design Team will then consider all of the feedback received on the various concepts, and develop a Final Master Plan for Havens Park. Check out the Announcements section for a schedule of the next public meeting dates. Click here for a printable version of the concepts.
